PhilaHealthia is Philadelphia's health co-op.
The initial payment plan will be activated when 1,000 people have pledged to to pay the membership fee.

Members pay $100/YEAR to be covered for an ever-growing range of everyday emergencies. PhilaHealthia seeks to enroll Philadelphia's 140,000 un-insured, plus thousands more under-insured.

PhilaHealthia is based on the Ithaca Health Alliance (see Ithaca's progress as chart and their payment list). As in Ithaca, as more members join and renew, the variety and size of payments expands. The Ithaca co-op has started a free clinic, and offers discounts with regional medical centers, doctors, dentists, and holistic healers.

Co-op America Approved for People and the Planet

HEALTH DEMOCRACY: PhilaHealthia and the Ithaca Health Alliance have established co-op sector health coverage as an alternative to corporate insurance and declining federal/state coverage. We endorse universal health coverage and seek to promote, by our example, a health care system exemplifying efficiency, generosity and humanity.

We call this the Health Democracy movement. Mutual Health Organizations (MHOs) are held to higher standards than HMOs. Yet we are more than a health payment plan. Our members form a movement which addresses public health issues.

AFFILIATIONS: PhilaHealthia is a member of Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) and affiliated with the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia.

LEGALITY: The Ithaca Health Alliance was approved to serve New York state residents after the NYS Insurance Dept received letters from members. It has been endorsed by Ithaca's Chamber of Commerce, Health Department, Cayuga Medical Center, Health Planning Council, state and local legislators.

PhilaHealthia likewise meets strict standards of transparency and democracy: and has been started by the Ithaca Health Alliance's founder.

Notwithstanding proven good service in New York state, Pennsylvania's Insurance Department ordered PhilaHealthia to cease and desist. Since we are uninsured, we cannot. We have sought meetings with regulators to gain approval as a pilot program. Here are samples of letters sent to the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.

Here is our article A Crime Not a Crisis: Why Pennsylvania Health Insurance Costs So Much.

"I'm proud to be among the first to join PhilaHealthia, which has begun to provide a low-cost co-op alternative for the uninsured. Its founder has proven, in Ithaca, NY, that this approach can free Americans from the high costs of health coverage, support small businesses, and set an example for the federal government."
--Judy Wicks, founder/CEO of
White Dog Café

"Everyone should join, even if they already have insurance, just to support it."
